Collection Development Policy

This living document was compiled by the Massasoit Library staff to capture the major ideas that guided the decision making processes across disciplines.

Introduction

The Libraries collect materials primarily in the format of physical books, eBooks, eJournals and streaming video. The selectors consider the needs of our community regarding preferred format.

eBook Policy

Priority is based on the course modality offered by the programs, acknowledging that as a format, electronic books are accessible to all modalities.

User license restrictions vary by vendor. Agreements include:

  • Unlimited - preferred if cost effective, especially for titles used as supplemental course texts or popular literary works
  • 3 user - specific class purchases only
  • 1 user - specific class, niche title, or other options cost prohibitive

Print Books Policy

Hardcover, library-bound books are preferred for materials supporting academic programs; however, paperbacks are acceptable for popular titles for addressing weight and portability issues

Media Policy

Streaming video is preferred within the current subscriptions.

If a streaming option is unavailable, then the Libraries will purchase a DVD. The Libraries' maintain an existing DVD collection for circulation.

VHS tapes are not a supported format.
