The direction of Steve Pemberton's young life changed when a kindly neighbor gifted a box of books to him (page 29):
Nothing I write can accurately capture the power and timeliness of the gift Mrs. Levin gave me that day..the characters that unfolded in those books and the worlds they lived in showed me a different life, a future far beyond the pain of the house on Arnold Street. I learned that not everyone lived the way I did, that most people came from intact homes that offered joy and laughter, freedom an exploration, promise and possibility. And because of what I read, I developed the ridiculously absurd notion that one day I, too, could have a life like the ones I read about.
As one of Massasoit's 50 Acts of Community Service, we hope to replicate Steve's experience for numerous children. We will collect books and donate them to the boys & girls currently associated with the Louison Center at the Old Colony YMCA in Brockton.
Please consider donating your gently used books, infant through young adults,or purchasing one or two of your old favorites that you can share with a child.
