ChatGPT, AI Writing Tools, and the Implications for Higher Education

Dr. Torrey Trust

This session will support participants in critically examining ChatGPT and other AI writing tools, consider how they might shift their practice, and identify practical ways to respond to these new technologies. All employees are welcome to this session.

Dr. Torrey Trust is an Associate Professor of Learning Technology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research, teaching, and service center on the critical examination of the interconnected relationship between teaching, learning, and technology. While technology might be considered “just a tool,” in the hands of a creative educator, technology can offer learning experiences that reach beyond our imagination and prepare us for the exciting, yet unpredictable, future.

Unpacking Boundaries and Savior Mentality in Trauma Informed Education

As a continuation of the Trauma Informed Education Series, author and Professor Alex Venet will lead a session that helps participants consider how the approach to boundaries and role clarity can ultimately help create a safe and caring environment for all students. All employees are welcome to this session.

Alex Shevrin Venet is an educator, professional development facilitator, and writer. She teaches in-service teachers at Antioch University and Castleton University, and undergraduate students at the Community College of Vermont. She is a former teacher/leader at an alternative therapeutic school. She lives in Winooski, Vermont. Understanding Campus Safety

Sergeant Robert Hoey

Campus safety is a shared responsibility, as such, this session will provide up-to-date information to help our campus community better respond and understand today’s safety and security challenges on campus. Discussion points to include the vital role that the Massasoit Community College Police Department plays in the total college program. All employees are welcome to this session.

Sergeant Hoey has worked for the Massasoit Community College Police Department for approximately 14 years. During this time, he has served as a campus police officer and currently is the commanding officer of evening shift. Sergeant Hoey currently holds specialized training certifications in multiple police disciplines, including, but not limited to; community self-defense and sexual assault.

Technology Tools Open Forum

Bill Morrison

This session will begin with an overview of multiple popular technology topics, including tools for digital signatures, communications, cybersecurity, and a road map for upcoming projects. There will also be plenty of time allotted for the audience to pose questions to our panel of experts. All employees are welcome to this session.

Chief Information Officer Bill Morrison will facilitate this session. His higher education technology experience spans three institutions and more than 20 years. Bill joined Massasoit as an Applications Manager in 2006 when the enterprise software environment consisted of little more than Banner. Since then Massasoit has added dozens of enterprise-level applications, joining hundreds of desktop applications used in classroom settings. Since becoming CIO in 2017, Bill has spearheaded a relentless focus on customer service and delivering quality solutions for students, faculty, and staff.

Amity Kelley is an IT professional with a background in software development and database management who joined Massasoit in 2018 as the Director of Enterprise Applications. When not working with her team on Massasoit’s enterprise software, she is a member of her local Friends of the Library board where she "talks" books and works to support library programs.

Dr. Lisa DeAngelis

The pandemic, among other disruptions, has caused many to pause and reevaluate long-held assumptions - about the work they do, about how they do it, about their priorities. There is a proven process you can use to take control of your own reality and build a life and career that is truly enjoyable and fulfilling. You can do this in small, manageable steps – without taking enormous risks or upsetting your entire life. Anyone can do this. You don’t have to be extraordinary to lead an extraordinary life. You will begin working this process during the session. I’ll even show you how to find time and space in your busy schedules to do the thinking and work necessary to create the extraordinary life you desire. All employees are welcome to this session.

Dr. Lisa DeAngelis’ research focuses on transformative teaching. Her work on teams, leadership, and transformative teaching has been published in peer-reviewed journals. She brings 3 decades of divisional and corporate leadership experience to the work of preparing leaders to excel in the twenty-first century. Lisa has helped facilitate programs such as a high-potential executive education program at Wharton, the Women’s Leadership Summit at Novo Nordisk, faculty and staff at West Point, the leadership team at Astra-Zeneca, HR leadership at LEGO, and MIT Lincoln Labs. Leadership is an inside job – it’s about influence, not authority. Lisa helps individuals understand who they are as a leader and how to bring that to each aspect of their life. She encourages individuals to step into their uniqueness, claim their power, and actualize their vision. In her coaching work, Lisa brings compassion, tenacity, curiosity, and humor to bear as we clear out the obstacles blocking your potential – even when that obstacle is you!

Re-Assessing Our Assessments in a Time of Rapid Change

Professors Drew Dunphy, Alex Cotter and Mare Ambrose

Between an explosion of online and hybrid learning models, chat bots and artificial intelligence, concerns about equity and conversations about “ungrading”, assessing student learning is perhaps more complicated than ever. How do we assure students are learning what they need to know and provide them with meaningful feedback in this environment? Professors Dunphy, Cotter and Ambrose will provide food for thought about a variety of approaches to assessment. This workshop will also provide ample time for participants to share strategies, discuss the challenges of assessing student learning, and explore where this conversation needs to go next at Massasoit. Talk Saves Lives

Plymouth County Suicide Prevention Coalition

Talk Saves Lives provides participants with a clear understanding of this leading cause of death, including the most up-to-date research on suicide prevention, and what they can do in their communities to save lives. Participants will learn common risk factors and warning signs associated with suicide, and how to keep themselves and others safe. All employees are welcome to this session.

Paul Gabriele is the original founder of the Plymouth County Suicide Prevention Coalition and now serves as a trained Facilitator for American Foundation for Suicide and Plymouth County Suicide Prevention Coalition.

Paul has worked in the mental health and suicide prevention field for many years. He has traveled overseas training over 1500 SIO’s (Suicide Intervention Officers) for the Army National Guard as well as many other military personnel.

He has also done work on Cape Cod with the Cape Cod Neighborhood Support Coalition as a Facilitator for the Nurturing Fathers Program as well as facilitator for other various evidence based best practice programs dealing with youth mental health, depression, suicide prevention, risk factors, and coping skills.

Paul is a certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor in Youth, Adult, Older Adults, First Responders and Military. Also serves as a trainer for QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer), Talk Saves Lives and is a certified Peer Support Specialist trained by the Samaritans lastly, certified in ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training). Paul is also a loss survivor.

Jennie currently serves as Co-Chair for the Plymouth County Suicide Prevention Coalition and holds a seat on the Executive Committee for the Mass. State Coalition for Suicide Prevention. She has been part of the Plymouth County Coalition since its inception back in June 2014.

Jennie is also a board member for Veterans Voice Network which airs on radio station, WATD 95.9FM, providing resources and information to our Veteran’s and families. Jennie is a certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor in Youth, Adult, Older Adults, First Responders and Military. Also serves as a trainer for QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer), Talk Saves Lives and is a certified Peer Support Specialist trained by the Samaritans lastly, also certified Instructor for ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training).

Harassment & Discrimination

This session will provide an overview of an individual’s legal rights and responsibilities under Title IX, Section 504, the ADA, and the Affirmative Action Policy. Topics include legal definitions, complaint process, and how to guide students who disclose an incident of harassment or discrimination.

As Massasoit’s Title IX and Compliance Officer, Amee Synnott oversees the College’s compliance with state and federal anti-discrimination laws. She has extensive experience as a higher ed lawyer and civil rights compliance officer, with a deep commitment to fairness that grew from seven years of working for the federal courts. Having begun her career as an adjunct English instructor, Amee has great respect for faculty and other professionals who work tirelessly to educate our students.
