Mission Statement of Massasoit Library Information Literacy Group

In accordance with the Massasoit Community College Mission Statement and the Libraries Mission Statement, the Massasoit Community College Libraries are committed to supporting the educational and personal enrichment goals of our diverse community by providing Information Literacy instruction to groups in the classroom, individually, and online.

The AAC&U defines Information Literacy as “the ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively and responsibly use and share that information for the problem at hand.” - Adopted from the National Forum on Information Literacy.

Therefore, the librarians at Massasoit Community College will:

  1. Educate and assess student proficiency in the ability to*:
    • Determine the extent of information needed

    • Access the needed information

    • Evaluate information and its sources critically

    • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose

    • Access and use information ethically and legally

  2. Collaborate with faculty and student services staff to integrate competencies across the curriculum.
  3. Work to meet the professional, personal enrichment and educational needs of college faculty and staff.
