Edwidge Danticat's Breath, Eyes, Memory explores what it means to be a woman and an immigrant, among many other themes. The people, places, and cultures left behind, along with the intergenerational memory of trauma shape the characters. This serves both to weigh them down and to lift the characters up. Throughout the novel, storytelling - through folktales, cassette tapes, letters, and conversation -- is an important tool the characters use to make meaning, build internal strength, and in some cases, find salvation.
Families often have famous stories that are told and retold among family members. Write about a story that is famous in your family. This might be a folktale that your grandmother loved to tell, or a story that is told and re-told whenever your family gathers. How has this story shaped who you are? Did it help you understand something important about your family history?
